UPDATECURRICULUM
BY SHERYL BADIN, SR/WA
CO- VICE CHAIR, INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Continued progress is being made by the International
Professional Development Committee (IPDC) on its priority
initiatives designed to enhance IRWA’s curriculum, career
paths, course development and course delivery. Following is
an update on the Five Year-Curriculum and Design Plan and
IRWA Career Path.
FIVE-YEAR CURRICULUM AND DESIGN PLAN
We recently announced that the IPDC is developing a five-
year plan for curriculum and course development based
on critical need, budget, time and availability of subject
matter experts and course designers. The IPDC is pleased
to report that a rolling five-year plan has been completed
based on recommendations from the Specialty Task Force
and in response to a comprehensive industry survey. This
first draft Five-Year Curriculum and Design Plan proposes
51 new learning products in the first five years, all of which
will be supported by professional instructional designers.
The International Governing Council (IGC) approved the
draft Five-Year Curriculum and Design Plan in concept at its
meeting in February. Refinements will continue to be made
over the next few months with full approval proposed at the
IGC meeting in June.
IRWA CAREER PATH:
INDUSTRY-BASED CERTIFICATION/DESIGNATION:
The IPDC continues to work toward streamlining IRWA’s
Certification paths in conjunction with the Industry and
Specialty Task Force recommendations and results from the
industry survey. Pipeline, Transportation and Utility industries,
together with a Generalist category, have repeatedly emerged
as distinctive streams, with the various specialties/disciplines
like appraisal, relocation and environment supporting each
of the four streams. After forming specialized learning teams,
the IPDC worked to build out certification pathways that
incorporate current courses, as well as core, intermediate and
advanced-level courses. The IPDC will continue to refine
the IRWA Career Path concept focused on industry-specific
recognition and will present its proposal to the IGC for
approval in June.
